International Determinants of Comprehensive Income Reporting by Groups – An Analytical and Comparative Study of Poland and Germany

The mainstream theoretical and empirical research presented in the study is a comparative analysis of comprehensive income reporting by groups listed in the Polish and German capital markets. The theoretical part of the article is dedicated to a scientific discussion on the determinants of the capital market and corporate governance in continental Europe and the so‑called ‘new governance’, related to the convergence of financial reporting standards, including IFRSs, that oblige groups of entities to prepare consolidated statements of comprehensive income. It also assesses the relevance of comprehensive income to capital market players. The empirical part contains the results of comparative research on the format and structure of consolidated statements and the nomenclature of their components, as well as the findings from studies of the value relevance of comprehensive income for the WIG30 and DAX groups in 2009–2019.

Value relevance of comprehensive income: Tax avoidance and derivative instruments

The existence of comprehensive income as the adoption of IFRS, which has been carried out in Indonesia since 2012, has resulted in this figure information as one of the important information used by investors. Company policies originating from operating and non-operating activities can affect financial information quality. This study deals with the effect of tax avoidance and derivative instruments on the value relevance of comprehensive income. Research data is derived from the financial data of non-financial companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) from 2012 to 2019, sourced from www.idx.co.id and finance.yahoo.com. This study’s total number of samples is 202 observations through purposive sampling with several criteria. Data in this research is included cross-section data so that the hypothesis testing employed in this research is ordinary least square regression analysis. This study finds that tax avoidance and derivative instruments are not associated with the value relevance of comprehensive income. This study suggests that investors’ investment decisions are not influenced by information on tax avoidance and ownership of derivative instruments. However, tax avoidance is positively associated with value relevance using the book value of equity basis, while derivative instruments ownership is negatively associated with value relevance with the comparable basis.

The value relevance of comprehensive income under alternative presentation formats permitted by ASU 2011-05

Under Accounting Standards Update 2011-05, firms can present comprehensive income (CI), defined as the sum of net income (NI) and other comprehensive income (OCI), in a single continuous statement or two separate, consecutive statements. We identify whether firms use the one- or two-statement approach for the years 2012–2015 and assess the value relevance of CI, NI, and OCI under the alternative approaches. We find that NI is less value relevant under the one-statement approach relative to the two-statement approach, while the value relevance OCI is marginally enhanced. We also find that the decrease (increase) in value relevance of NI (OCI) under the one-statement approach is driven by a decrease (an increase) in the value relevance of operating income (unrealized gains/losses on securitized assets). Additional analyses demonstrate that the reduced value relevance of NI under the one-statement approach persists only in subsamples that report positive OCI. Our findings suggest that, consistent with arguments put forth in comment letters in support of the one-statement approach, increasing the prominence of OCI may result in investors incorporating this information to a greater extent in their valuation decisions. However, consistent with comment letters in opposition to the one-statement approach, we also present evidence that suggests presenting OCI in the same statement as NI may also draw attention away from the portion of NI that reflects the core operations of the firm.

Value Relevance of Comprehensive Income for the Canadian Market*

ABSTRACTThe value relevance of comprehensive income (CI) compared to net income (NI) remains unresolved. We look at this issue in the Canadian market, using association methods to determine the value relevance of reporting CI and other comprehensive income (OCI) components for stock prices and returns. The sample consists of all the firms in the S&P/TSX Composite Index that prepared their financial statements according to Canadian standards or International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) over the 2008–2016 period. Although we find no evidence that CI is more value relevant than NI for stock prices and returns, we note that some OCI components are incrementally value relevant beyond NI for both amounts. In addition, financial services firms differ from other companies in terms of the relationships between some of their OCI components and prices or returns, with such firms even driving some relationships. Relationships between OCI components and prices or returns are also affected when data from the financial crisis period are excluded, with some relationships even changing after IFRS adoption. These results inform Canadian standard setters and financial statement users that OCI components are decision useful for the Canadian market.

AbstractIn this paper, we investigate the value relevance of comprehensive income and its components for a sample of 92 New Zealand companies over the period 2003–2010. We find a stronger association of aggregate comprehensive income with stock price and market returns relative to net income. The change in the asset revaluation reserve and the change in fair value of available‐for‐sale securities drive this association. However, foreign currency translation and cash flow hedges are also associated with prices and returns.

AbstractThis study investigates the value relevance of comprehensive income (CI) reporting contextual to the specific market and financial reporting environment in China. We posit the information content of CI or other comprehensive incomes (OCI) is affected by the information environment. By applying analyst coverage as a main proxy for firms' information environment, this study finds that analyst following contributes to reducing information asymmetry and increasing information preciseness and investors' comprehension, thus it is positively associated with the value relevance of CI or OCI information. We also document that a few OCI items have incremental explanatory power to firm valuation in the Chinese market, which is mainly for those firms with greater analyst coverage. We therefore conclude that the information environment should be taken into consideration in evaluating the value relevance of CI reporting.

This paper investigates the relative and the incremental value relevance of Comprehensive Income (CI) and Other Comprehensive Income (OCI) across European countries after the mandatory adoption of the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) standards. This topic, which has already been analysed in other countries, drew the attention of academics and practitioners in Europe after the issuance of International Accounting Standard 1-revised, which requires entities to prepare a statement of comprehensive income (SOCI) in which both CI and OCI components are disclosed. The investigation of the value relevance of accounting amounts is important in order to evaluate their usefulness, because it highlights whether they reflect information investors use in making economic decisions. This study analyses a sample made of all the European listed entities of countries belonging to the EU at the date of issuance of EU Regulation 1606/2002. Our analysis involves a period from 2006 to 2011 and includes 16,511 firm-year observations. Our results show that Net Income (NI) is more value-relevant than CI, even though the total OCI of the period adds relevant information to those already disclosed in other accounting items such as NI and Book Value. In this regard, we found that the coefficient of the total OCI of the period is lower than that of NI, a result to be expected because of its transitory nature. Our findings also suggest that the requirement to issue an SOCI has not produced a significant change in the value relevance of both CI and the total OCI of the period leading to the conclusion that its location does not affect the value relevance of these items. Finally, we found significant differences in the incremental value relevance of the total OCI of the period across European countries, differences that seem to be caused by the countries' characteristics, such as the source of funds (credit/equity and insider/outsider) and the legal systems.

Assessing value relevance of comprehensive income in European banks and other financial institutions

The IAS/IFRS compliant groups have been disclosing comprehensive income since 2009, when the IAS 1-revised became effective. This paper aims to investigate the value relevance of comprehensive income and its components in European banks and other financial institutions. The research has been developed by having a sample of 166 European listed groups whose data have been collected in the 2009, 2010 and 2011 (498 firm-year observations) consolidated financial statements. In contrast to previous findings, related to all the sectors, our research highlights a higher value relevance of comprehensive income in respect to net income. Moving to the single OCI components, our results suggest that gains and losses on remeasuring available-for-sale financial assets (AFSit) are value relevant in European banks and other financial institutions.

The value relevance of comprehensive income under IFRS and US GAAP: empirical evidence from Germany

The IASB and FASB are currently conducting a project on performance reporting which broadly addresses the definition and presentation of income in financial statements. This study examines and compares the current practice of performance reporting under IFRS and US GAAP within a homogenous institutional setting. Therefore, it uses a sample of companies which were listed in the major segments of the German stock exchange during the period 2001?2004 and which voluntarily applied IFRS or US GAAP. The major results of our study are that: comprehensive income appears to provide no incremental value relevant information beyond net income in explaining stock returns; comprehensive income under IFRS provides more incremental value relevant information than comprehensive income under US GAAP; concerning the components of other comprehensive income, only unrealised gains and losses from available-for-sale financial assets in the IFRS sample are clearly incremental value relevant.
